State Superintendent Tony Evers awarded Dunwiddie Elementary School as one of 21 High Achieving schools in the state of Wisconsin. This recognition is based on the state assesments in reading and in math.

Our Schools of Recognition are staffed by dedicated educators,” Evers said. “Their success is something to celebrate; it serves as an example of the importance of schools, families, and communities working together to ensure that every child graduates ready for college and careers.”

Message from the Principal

  • July 21, 2016

    Dear Dunwiddie Elementary Families,

I hope you are all enjoying the summer! I am honored to join the welcoming, strong school community that you, our children, and the staff have worked so hard to create and grow over the years. It has been a pleasure getting to know each DES staff member this summer and spending time with our District Administration and School Board planning for the 2016-17 school year. We are also deep in the remodel and expansion project, which is progressing right on schedule, thanks to the hard work and collaboration of everyone involved in the project. It is a very exciting summer!

As we prepare for fall, my goal is to work closely with the entire school community to continue to grow the strong culture of learning, positive relationships, and community at Dunwiddie. I know I have big shoes to fill, and I intend to support everyone through this transition with positive energy, patience, and a tireless work ethic. My education experience in the West Allis- West Milwaukee School District as an elementary teacher, academic dean/ instructional coach, K-12 curriculum and instruction coordinator, and most recently as elementary principal, have primed me with the skills necessary to not only continue the great work already underway, but to work in collaboration with all stakeholders to build a shared vision for the next steps in continuing to provide a great education in Port Washington.

Having grown up in Port, I have firsthand experience of the lifelong impact that living and learning here has on children. When our twin sons were born, while living closer to our jobs, my husband and I realized how important it was to us that they grow up in the community that offered me countless opportunities and fond memories. We moved to the Dunwiddie neighborhood three summers ago and feel lucky every day to be raising our boys in (what we believe is) the greatest place to raise a family. With very high hopes of one day working in the PWSSD, the opportunity to join the DES team is the greatest of my career to date.

As your principal, I will strive each day to bring educators and parents together to inspire, motivate, and improve the lives and futures of our children. With a commitment to student-centered learning, embracing a whole child - whole teacher approach to leadership, building rigorous curriculum that engages all learners, and integrating technology in purposeful ways to redesign learning experiences, I believe we can develop the traits and dispositions in our kids that will span far beyond the classroom walls.

As we get to know one another, you can expect me to show compassion for all, establish relationships built upon mutual respect and trust (and laughter, whenever possible), focus on continuous improvement through creativity and thoughtful risk-taking, and consistently strive for excellence in myself and others. I am so very excited to get to know all of you and your children; it is going to be a great year! See you in fall.

    Sincerely,

    Joanna Bannon
